On December 15, a public lecture entitled "Ground and Earthquake Disasters in Hokuriku Region" took place at the Kanazawa Ekimae Satellite. The lecture were attended by 27 people ranging in age from their 20s to 70s.
Associate Professor Yoshitaka Sakata from the Faculty of Geosciences and Civil Engineering, Institute of Science and Engineering, introduced earthquake disasters related to the ground, such as cracks, uplift, liquefaction, landslides, and other earthquake disasters. He explained that the Hokuriku region is located in a unique natural environment of Japan, that each region has its own unique ground conditions, and that there are many geological features that lead to disasters. Next, Associate Professor Shunichi Kobayashi from the Faculty of Geosciences and Civil Engineering, Institute of Science and Engineering Engineering, introduced active faults and sand dunes around Ishikawa Prefecture, and then looked back on past earthquakes and confirmed the various aspects of the complex disaster caused by the Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2024 with photos. Next, Professor Gen Furuya from Toyama Prefectural University explained the topography and geology of Toyama, where landslides occur frequently, including the debris flow disaster of the Joganji River caused by the Hietsu earthquake that occurred in 1858. Finally, Professor Satoru Otsuka from Nagaoka University of Technology explained the engineering properties of the geology of Niigata Prefecture, which is at high risk of subsidence and flooding.
During the talk discussion, chaired by Associate Professor Sakata, the participants discussed their thoughts on the Noto Peninsula earthquake 2024, their impressions on the current state of recovery and reconstruction, recommendations for earthquake countermeasures for government and residents, and research goals in geotechnical engineering.
Students commented: "I realized that the words 'prepare pessimistically and respond optimistically' are important and that it's necessary to prepare for the emergency as much as possible."
